Packing note - What is a packing note?

A packing note is an itemised document that accompanies a shipment of goods to describe the contents of the package.

A packing note might also be referred to as a delivery note, a shipping list, a packing list or a packing slip.

Purpose of a packing note

By describing the contents of a package, the packing note lets transport agencies, government authorities and customers know what’s in the package. This helps each party handle the package accordingly.

It’s also common for customers to use packing notes as a checklist when receiving their orders.

If you’re sending items abroad, you may be legally required to include a packing note to help tax and customs authorities assess whether any Customs Duty is due.

Content of a packing note

Unlike invoices, packing notes have few binding rules. However, you should still include some basic information to help each party understand the contents of the package and to ensure clear communication. A packing note should include:

  • The date of the order.

  • An itemised list of the contents of the packages.

  • A description of the contents including quantity, and sometimes weight, of each item.

You may also want to include a return address or codes for each item. Packing notes don’t need to include the price of the order.
