Meierei: A Piece of the Alps in the Heart of Berlin

Meierei transports a taste of Alpine cuisine to Berlin. Specialising in delicacies from Switzerland, Austria, Southern Germany and Northern Italy the cafe brings the hospitality of a mountain lodge to the bustling streets of the German capital. We caught up with cafe owner Sandra to learn more about why she decided to open Meierei and using SumUp.

What motivated you to start your own business?

The biggest motivation is being allowed to be creative, to be able to make my own decisions and to fulfil these with what I offer my customers.

Is there a typical Meierei customer?

No, we don't really have a typical customer. We have young to old, male and female, hipster and more traditional; it goes through the whole range of society. The diversity is very interesting to work with.

Why are card payments important for your business?

Card payments have become more and more important for us. Many bank branches are closing, so many customers come in asking if they can pay with card, including many cashless tourists. We decided to start accepting card payments a few years ago and it has just continued to grow. At the moment around 30-40% of our takings are card payments.

What do your customers think of using SumUp?

Our customers really like it. They think it's cute and modern. It has all the features you need, especially as it accepts contactless payments it's become a really important tool on our counter.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to open their own business?

For someone who wants to open their own business, my advice would be to think about a strong concept, focus on a few things, be passionate about what you do and go for it!

Thank you for sharing your story with us Sandra, and we wish you all the success in the future with you delightful cafe!

Do you also have a business story to share? At SumUp we are always looking to share the successes of merchants who dared to turn their dreams into reality! Feel free to send an email to [email protected]. We’d love to hear from you!
